The first three beatitudes that Jesus gave in His sermon on the Mount build upon one another. The first deals with our intellectual understanding that we are poor in spirit and are spiritually empty before an Almighty God. This intellectual understanding then leads to an emotional response as we mourn over our sins. When we are poor in spirit and mourn over our sins, it develops into a lifestyle of meekness and humility. As we humble ourselves before God, He will lift us up.
